Of Hygiene and Diet and Exercise.

The night was a bit unusual. I fell asleep about 8:45 in my chair, waiting for the CNA to come prep me for a shower. They have to wrap my PICC line to keep it dry. It is a bit of a challenge, because the IV needs to keep running while I am in the shower. Anyway, at 10:30 I awoke and was cold and so tired that I just crawled into bed. The CNA came in about 11:00, profusely apologetic. We agreed to wait until morning, lest I fall asleep in the shower.

As the night progressed, I found myself having to use the rest room every 45 - 60 minutes. Now that is enough of an intrusion on a good night's sleep, but again, I have to be hooked up to the IV 24/7, so a restroom visit means unplugging the battery charger on the IV pump, rolling the IV stand into the bathroom, then back out to my bedside again. I have to remember to plug in the battery charger again, or the pump starts squawking and requires a visit from the RN.

I have become quite bloated from all the saline that is being pumped into me, and I think that is why my kidneys seem to be in overdrive. The day nurse said he will bring it up in rounds and see if they can back off slightly on the saline.

Finally, at 4:00AM, I awoke with a sudden bout of nausea and emesis. Not a pleasant way to awaken. Since I was up, the night nurse did my morning blood draw, gave me some Zofran for nausea and then sat and chatted with me. We are of like mind about spiritual matters, and he had some helpful insights to share.

After he left, I sat in my chair and slept another hour and a quarter, perhaps. I sent off a note to Jill to let her know I am OK, and it was time for breakfast. With some trepidation, I ordered Honey Nut Cheeios, toast and coffee. So far, it is all staying down. It is nice to have my blood sugar back up. I'm actually feeling like I can do this today. So, I am not going to worry about tomorrow. "Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." (Matthew 6:34)

Goal for the day: a mile of laps around the floor and eating lunch and dinner.

    1. Thanks, Mariah. We love you and Nick and the kids, too. When I get out of "stir," we are definitely going to make a visit to see the farm and your growing kids. Are they in high school now or college? ;-)
